KISSIMMEE — Thursday was Fall Fling at Johnson University Florida. Fall Fling is a Florida campus tradition since the inception of the campus as Central Florida Bible College.
Fall Fling is an event once a year during the fall semester at Johnson University Florida when there are no classes or schoolwork due that day. During Fall Fling, the Senior Class plans different activities and meals for the whole campus community.
But here’s the catch about Fall Fling: None of the students know when it is except for the senior class. Therefore during the fall semester, everyone is waiting in anticipation for Fall Fling.
One of the highlights about Fall Fling is how it is announced. Throughout the years, there have been various methods employed to announce Fall Fling: Going into the students’ rooms and waking them up by running chainsaws (without the chains), driving hovercrafts through the lawn, having the fire department come with fire trucks and wake everyone up, etc…
This year, to announce Fall Fling, an emergency security meeting was called by Dr. Michael Chambers and Dr. David Eubanks in the gym late on Wednesday night. When the students arrived, Chambers talked about security issues in the area over the past few weeks, then handed the microphone over to Eubanks for a “special announcement.”
Many of the students were then wondering what was going to happen next.Eubanks drew in the students by saying there was something he had been thinking about a lot for the last few weeks.
“There is just no other way to tell you about what is happening other than…. Fall Fling!, ” Eubanks told the students.
Immediately after he said this, confetti cannons went off from the senior class officers, music started blaring from the speakers, and students were yelling and getting excited that Fall Fling had finally arrived!
The Senior Class Officers then rushed to the front of the students to tell them about the day. The Senior Class announced that this year was the 40th Fall Fling, and they wanted Fall Fling to be the best day ever for the students, therefore the theme of Fall Fling this year would be “Carpe Diem” or “Seize the Day”.
Fall Fling this year was a day when both students and professors were able to relax from their classes, and to enjoy fellowshipping with one another as a campus community and more importantly, as the body of Christ.
