The Royals Baseball Team traveled to Toccoa, Ga. Saturday, taking on the Screaming Eagles of Toccoa Falls College in a single nine-inning game to open the season.
Chase Newsome kicked off the offense for the Royals in the second inning with a line-drive solo shot over the center field fence, giving Johnson a 1-0 lead.
The Royals added to their lead in the top of the third when Andrew McGuffey came through with a two-out RBI single to right field scoring Jonathan Howard from third.
The Screaming Eagles managed to cross a runner in the bottom of the second and eventually took a 4-2 lead in the fifth off a three-run home run by Zach Zillweger.
After putting up five more runs in the seventh, Toccoa Falls cruised to a 9-2 victory.
The Royals’ bats fizzled out after the third inning, tallying just six hits total for the game. Chase Burke lead the offense with two singles and Chase Newsome had one hit in two at-bats, reaching base three times.
Luke Hobbs grabbed the win for the Eagles and, despite a solid performance on the mound, Garret Crawford took the loss. Crawford allowed six hits and four runs in five innings.
The Royals are scheduled for their home opener Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Montreat College.
