The Johnson University Royals Baseball Team will travel to Pippa Passes, Ky. Friday to take on the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College in a three-game series. The two teams will play a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. followed by a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Royals held a light practice Thursday evening in anticipation of the trip. As his players warmed up before batting practice and fielding drills, Head Coach Ben Fair said he hoped to prepare the team mentally for the match-up.
“This weekend is going to be a big series for us for sure,” Fair said. “Alice Lloyd has got a good program— it’s a big region game.”
The Royals took one game in three from the Eagles in a March 2015 series, picking up their first win of last year’s season. This time around, with six straight wins and a record of 6-2, Fair said he wants to win two games.
“Our goal is to take the series from them this year. We’d love to go down there and win two out of three,” Fair said. “I think this is going to be a big test for us.”
For the opening game, Fair plans on pitching Evan Duriga, the veteran senior with an undefeated 2-0 record. Coming off wins against Lincoln and Valley Forge, Duriga said he felt confident in his ability.
“My goal is just to throw three pitches well,” Duriga said, “to keep everything down in the zone and to be able to just pound the strike zone— not let anyone on on walks.”
Max McCoig will throw game two on Friday and Garrett Crawford will take the mound for the Royals on Saturday.
